Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re brand new to motocross or already racing regularly, it’s normal to have questions before booking training. Here are some of the most common questions riders and parents ask about Smokin Joe’s Speed & Style MX School.

What skill levels do you work with?

All skill levels are welcome, from complete beginners to experienced racers. Training is adjusted based on the rider’s current ability, comfort level, and goals on the bike.

Can beginners book training sessions?

Absolutely. Beginner riders are always welcome.

A lot of newer riders feel overwhelmed when getting into motocross, especially at busy tracks. Training focuses on helping riders build confidence, learn proper technique, and become comfortable on the bike without feeling pressured or out of place.

Do I need my own bike?

Yes. Riders must bring their own bike to training sessions. Bike rentals are not available at this time.

What should I bring to a training session?

Riders should bring:

  • Their bike
  • Helmet
  • Boots
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Chest protector
  • Water
  • Fuel for their bike
  • Any additional riding gear they normally use

Showing up prepared helps riders get the most out of their session.

Where do training sessions take place?

Most group sessions are held at Milford Riders Club in Milford, CT, but locations can vary depending on the training calendar and track schedule.

Always check the training calendar for updated locations and availability.

How long are training sessions?

Session lengths vary depending on the type of booking. Most training sessions typically run between 1–3 hours.

What’s the difference between group and private training?

Group Training

Group sessions allow riders to train alongside others in a structured environment while still receiving direct coaching and feedback from Joe.

Private Training

Private sessions offer more one-on-one instruction and are tailored specifically to the rider and what they need to improve most.

Both options are designed to help riders improve safely and confidently.

How do I book a training session?

All sessions are booked directly through the website using the online training calendar.

After booking, riders will complete a rider information form and Joe will follow up directly with new riders to discuss goals and training details.

Will Joe personally coach every session?

Yes. Riders work directly with Joe during training sessions and receive hands-on coaching throughout the session.

What do riders usually work on during training?

Training is customized to the rider, but common areas of focus include:

  • Cornering
  • Body positioning
  • Bike control
  • Braking and throttle control
  • Jump confidence
  • Line selection
  • Starts
  • Race consistency
  • Rider confidence

What if I’m nervous or lack confidence on the bike?

That’s more common than most riders think.

A lot of riders struggle with confidence after crashes, difficult track conditions, jumps, or simply feeling stuck at their current skill level. Training is designed to help riders become more comfortable and controlled on the bike at their own pace.

The goal isn’t to throw riders into situations they aren’t ready for. It’s to help them improve steadily and build real confidence that carries over every time they ride.

Do you train kids?

Yes. Many riders training with Smokin Joe’s are younger riders who are learning fundamentals, building confidence, and improving their overall riding skills.

Training is always adjusted based on the rider’s age, experience, and comfort level.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If weather or track conditions are unsafe, sessions may be rescheduled. Riders will be notified ahead of time if changes need to be made.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Late cancellations may result in a cancellation fee or loss of the session.

Do riders need to sign a waiver?

Yes. All riders must complete a waiver before participating in any training sessions.

Do you travel to different tracks?

Yes. Training locations can vary depending on the training schedule and events throughout the season.

Check the training calendar regularly for updated locations and upcoming sessions.
